purifies

The project

It is a pioneering innovation test in Europe, patented and manufactured in Spain and with support from the European Union.

This initiative, developed with the support of Aena’s Innovation, Sustainability and Customer Experience Department and promoted by the companies Murarte and Tecnoseñal, aims to offer passengers a wellness experience based on nature, improving the quality of the air they breathe.

The solution

This column has been treated with an environmental solution that combines the transformation of the used tire, a waste that takes 1,000 years to biodegrade, into a resource linked to nature that helps mitigate greenhouse gases and volatile organic compounds.

To create this vertical garden, based on the circular economy, science and technology, panels made from sheets made from discarded tyres that have previously been treated using photocatalytic nanotechnology have been used. In this way, by imitating the photosynthesis of plants and thanks to oxidation processes activated by light, air and humidity, they are able to eliminate common pollutants in the atmosphere, such as SOx (sulfur oxide), VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and NOx (nitrogen oxide).

This project is aligned with the following programs of Aena’s Sustainability Strategy:

Carbon neutrality

Responsible use of resources

0 %
NOx mitigation

The results from the independent Fraunhofer laboratory support a NOx mitigation percentage of 24.3%.

250 used tires

Air purification equivalent to that achieved by a forest of 55 trees

This project has been made possible thanks to:

It is the largest airport operator in the world, with a network of 46 airports and 2 heliports in Spain, and a significant international presence. Aena is a responsible company, with an important role as an economic driver in the areas of influence of the airports, and with a firm commitment to development and sustainability.Aena is carrying out its 2021-2030 Sustainability Strategy, in which it plans to invest 750 million euros to respond to major environmental challenges and criteria. To this end, the strategy addresses both Aena's own operations and those of the other actors in the airport ecosystem and, in this sense, contemplates collaboration with third parties through joint projects that allow it to minimise its impact on the environment.

It is an initiative of the union of two Spanish companies:

European company with a position in LATAM, expert in sustainable innovation that implements urban solutions with minimal maintenance, high durability, that prevent vandalism, reduce cleaning by 50%, mitigate NOx by up to 80%, practicing circular economy, beautifying cities and helping companies and governments to comply with climate pacts with the United Nations. All its technology is patented and supported by the European Commission.

Tecnoseñal is a company belonging to the Tecnove Group that incorporates environmental sustainability, through cutting-edge photocatalysis techniques, in all its Design and Engineering projects related to corporate image, digital and electronic signage, commercial furniture and corporate events. Tecnoseñal has obtained the Achilles Gold Sustainability Certificate, a recognition that evaluates and accredits its high performance in organizational governance, social, community and environmental matters.

Collaborate:

Non-profit organisation responsible for ensuring the correct management of tyres, in accordance with the waste hierarchy, which are placed on the Spanish replacement market by its member companies when they reach the end of their useful life. In addition to this environmental management, SIGNUS puts all its effort into giving value to the materials obtained from their transformation and recycling, opening up new opportunities for these materials in different sectors through alliances and collaborations with companies, technological institutes, universities and other entities and institutions.

Michelin is building a world-leading composites company and experiences that transform our lives. A pioneer in materials science for more than 130 years, Michelin leverages its unique expertise to make a significant contribution to human progress and a more sustainable world. With its unrivalled mastery of polymeric compounds, Michelin constantly innovates to manufacture high-quality tires and critical components for demanding sectors such as mobility, construction, aeronautics, low-carbon energy and healthcare. The care it puts into its products and its deep understanding of its customers inspire Michelin to deliver the best experiences. These range from data-driven solutions and artificial intelligence for professional fleets to the discovery of excellent restaurants and hotels recommended by the MICHELIN Guide.

Pioneering North American patent in the manufacture of photocatalytic nanotechnology, which provides various solutions for the continuous purification of environmental media, both indoors and outdoors. It is a NASA partner and recognized by iScape as one of the 10 projects that will shape the European Union in the next 60 years. In this project, they are responsible for the implementation of the different photocatalytic products, as well as laboratory tests and sensorization.
